This shirt is first immersed in a tannin-rich dye bath made from the bark of local Teichiki wood, then plunged into iron-rich mud known as dorotetsu. It has undergone twenty-five cycles of Dorozome, mud-dyeing, to reach a deep and complex colour. As each piece is hand-dyed by Kanai Kougei in Amami-Ōshima, slight irregularities in the finished colour may appear. The shirt is designed to evolve through washing, wear and exposure to sunlight.
