In 1953, Christian and Grethe Flensted crafted two paper storks suspended from straws for their daughter's christening: the very first Flensted mobile was born. What began as a small extra income alongside a vegetable garden on the Danish island of Funen has grown, three generations later, into a global reference in Scandinavian design. Handmade by a network of home-based artisans, Flensted mobiles have entered the permanent collections of MoMA, the Guggenheim and the Tate Gallery. A dedicated "mobile hospital" even repairs pieces passed down through generations.
