Why do we say objet d’occasion when we mean second-hand?

A second-hand object is first and foremost an opportunity, an occasion. Second-hand objects do not correspond to fixed criteria, they are not chosen like a microwave in a department store. A second-hand object is something you meet. You let yourself be surprised, open to chance — or already with an idea in mind, to which the object you find rarely corresponds.
