New York Living Rooms - Dominique Nabokov, Appatemento

New York Living Rooms is the first in Dominique Nabokov's holy trinity of interior photography, reissued by Apartamento Publishing more than two decades after its first publication in 1998. Originally commissioned as a photo essay for The New Yorker in 1995, it offers a candid and intimate study of the interior living spaces of some of the city's most legendary cultural figures, including Susan Sontag, Norman Mailer, Louise Bourgeois, Francesco Clemente, Allen Ginsberg and Joan Didion.

Without adding or changing anything, Nabokov calls these images his inner "portraits". Some spaces are indulgent and ostentatious, others house the bare necessities, but Nabokov records them simply for his fellow voyeurs and leaves the rest for us to decipher. Long out of print, this updated edition brings to life an era in New York City's history, through Nabokov's original Polaroid photographs and the original introduction by English poet James Fenton. It also sets the stage for subsequent editions in Paris and Berlin, which Apartamento will reissue later in 2021.
