In 1774 German shoe manufacturer Birkenstock created an innovative contoured in-sole for custom made shoes. First developed in 1964, the original prototype of the famous sandal with a flexible cork deep footbed, widely sold in the United States, became a symbol for American liberalism. Today its orthopedic properties and paired down style are sought after internationally.
